Repopulating Coast Redwoods in Los Angeles
The Issue
Dear Los Angelenos,
Redwood Trees are on the brink of extinction. We need to save them now! It’s estimated that up to 96% of the redwoods were logged. Now, 45% of the Redwoods that are left are found in the Redwood Nations and the State Parks. The parks are protecting 38,982 acres of old forest.
At the same time, the logging industry is clear-cutting an unprecedented number of trees during the wildfire season, falsely claiming that trees cause fires.
Something is going on, it is clear that Climate Change is taking effect. Trees are our best allies and best defense for tackling this monumental disaster.
Coast Redwoods(Sequoia sempervirens) take the carbon from the CO2 and leave the oxygen in the air which humans thrive in. You may be asking yourself, why choose Redwoods? Why not a Common Oak, Cypress, or Ceder. Well, did you know, Redwoods are indigenous to Northern California? They are in great danger of extinction due to the logging industry. And, they have an enormous amount of leaf surface area to be able to conduct the oxygen/CO2 exchange cycle. While it is true Oaks are the state tree, they are already the focus of attention. because of this fact, guidelines are in place to populate oaks in planting plans for yards and commercial sites. Meanwhile, designers are mandated to replace Oaks at a ratio of 1 Oak tree for every square inch of tree caliper removed.
Redwoods must be preserved.
Sign this petition to stop clear-cutting now. Make the cutting of all-natural living Coast Redwoods illegal unless plantation grown. Existing dead Redwoods or ones that pose a public health and safety hazard as certified by a California licensed Arborist may be removed, otherwise, any tree removal will require a state permit for mitigation replacement at a ratio of 1 new inch of tree caliper for every inch removed.
This petition also supports repopulating Redwoods. What this means is not set in stone at the time of writing, but we would like to plant upwards of 5 million Redwoods in California. And 500,000 of them in Los Angeles County.
We as a community will affirmatively plant more Redwoods.
