Replace the Speed Camera and reduce the speed limit to 50mph from Hawford to Ombersley.
The Issue
The A449 stretch between Worcester and Ombersley has long been a concern for the local community, including myself. I've witnessed first hand how speeding vehicles disregard the current speed limits, posing a severe threat to everyone's safety. This road is used daily, not just by commuters but also by families heading for recreational activities. The existing speed camera, which was initially installed to regulate traffic speed, has now been destroyed due to a road user.
Since the destruction of the old camera, motorist have been seen increasing their speed on the stretch of road where the camera was.
The issues
The speed limit must be reduced to 50mph, the speed camera needs to be replaced.
The Ombersley Road into Worcester has recently been changed from a nation speed limit to a 50mph due to the new building development.
The Hawford to OmbersleyA449 serves, a school, a holiday resort, a fishery, three hamlets Hadley, Hawford Woods, Hawford ridding school and Worcester Young Farmers it is important that we act now to prevent any further fatal incidents. The most recent fatel accident was at the Sinton junction.
Over the past few years there have been one fatal accident, 11 serious accidents and fourteen slight accidents,
Statistics show that well-maintained and efficiently functioning speed cameras can reduce road accidents by up to 25% (source: Department for Transport, UK). This is not just about bolstering numbers; it's about preventing potential tragedies. By replacing the old speed camera with a new, state-of-the-art model, we can ensure real-time speed monitoring and immediate enforcement of traffic laws.
On my way home this evening i saw that there was an accident at the junction to Hawford Woods (3/9/26)!
We call on the Worcestershire County Council & West Mercia Police to prioritize this issue and invest in a new speed camera system for the A449. It’s not a simple infrastructure upgrade; it’s a step towards safeguarding our community. More than this, it's about preserving the wellbeing of our families and friends who use this route daily.
Please join me in voicing our concerns by signing this petition. Let's urge our local authorities to take immediate action regarding the replacement of the existing speed camera and implementing a 50mph speed limit aiming to make the A449 a safer passage for everyone.
