The Issue

UPDATE: The County Board Meeting on Monday, Nov 3 at 6pm at the Burgaw Government Building located at 805 S Walker St Burgaw, NC 28425 is when this is on the agenda to be VOTED ON. The Commissioners want people to show up to show that they care and WANT this done. I will be there. Please come if you are able to come, please come support our community!

As a Hampstead resident and regular visitor to Kiwanis Park, I've seen firsthand how much this playground means to local families. It's not just a cluster of swings and slides – it's a place where children make lifelong memories, where they interact, learn, and grow. But over the years, it's become clear that our playground is in desperate need of an update. It’s worn down, outdated, and our kids deserve better. This isn’t just about equipment; it’s about showing that our community’s children matter.

The Pender County Parks and Recreation Department’s own evaluations flagged this playground for replacement back in 2020, yet here we are in 2025 still waiting for that change. Our playground is now five years past its proposed replacement date. The current state of the playground not only hinders fun but also poses potential safety risks, which is unacceptable when it comes to the welfare of our children.

Recent reports and parental feedback suggest increasing concerns over the playground's safety. The surface area has deteriorated, the equipment is rusting and warping, and there's inadequate shading exposing children to harsh weather conditions. Parks are essential community spaces that should be safe havens for play and community gathering, not areas of concern.

We’re calling on the Pender County Parks and Recreation Department to prioritize the replacement of the playground at Hampstead Kiwanis Park immediately, and add the splash pad that it was asked 6 years ago. It’s time to invest in safe, modern equipment ensuring that every child has the chance to enjoy their childhood in a secure and playful environment.

An accessible, safe, and engaging playground is not a privilege – it's a necessity. Let’s show our kids that they are valued members of this community and that their safety and happiness are our top priorities. Please support this cause by signing this petition.
