Replace the EMSB Milk Program with Healthy Alternatives

Replace the EMSB Milk Program with Healthy Alternatives
The Issue
The English Montreal School Board should replace its milk program with healthy non-dairy alternatives. Canada's food guide no longer suggests dairy for healthy eating [1] and so it's time for schools to make the same change.
A cow's milk is meant to be ingested and digested by their calves. Consequently, many people are lactose-intolerant because they lack "enough of a digestive track enzyme" [2] to properly digest lactose.
According to the research, "dairy products have little or no benefit for bones [and] drinking milk does not improve bone strength in children" [3]. Furthermore, "[m]ilk and other dairy products are the top source of saturated fat in the American diet, contributing to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease. Studies have also linked dairy to an increased risk of breast, ovarian, and prostate cancers" [3].
Overall, dairy products in schools should be replaced by nutritious and allergen-free vegan options to promote health, empathy, and to include more children.
