Replace the Elevator at the Ryerss Museum and Library

The Issue

Located in Burholme Park in Philadelphia, PA, the Ryerss Museum and Library is considered the “jewel of the Northeast.” The Ryerss Museum and Library was formerly the home of the Ryerss family, Robert being its last descendant. Upon his death he turned over his estate to the City of Philadelphia to be used as a park, library, and museum “free to the people forever.” Countless patrons, young and old from the community and afar have enjoyed this free museum and library and a host of year round events. Perhaps you’ve had the opportunity to visit the museum, borrow a book, or attend one of the many activities? You’d know what a treasure this museum is!

Unfortunately, the museum’s elevator has been inoperable for an extended period of time. The technicians are unable to obtain parts and rendered the elevator beyond repair. This over 45-year-old elevator has reached its useful life. Many who visit cannot traverse the multitude of steep stairwells. This beautiful museum and all it’s wonderful activities are no longer accessible to the young, elderly, handicapped, and numerous older volunteers.

The Ryerss Museum and Library should be accessible to all who wish to visit or participate in its events, just as Robert intended! Please join the Friends of Ryerss in signing this petition, “ we the undersigned are concerned members of the community and surrounding vicinities who respectively request the City of Philadelphia, Division of Parks and Recreation, replace the elevator at the Ryerss Museum and Library at 7370 Central Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111.”
