Replace Styrofoam Lunch Trays with Compostable Trays at Kingwood Middle School
Replace Styrofoam Lunch Trays with Compostable Trays at Kingwood Middle School
The Issue
As a committed environmental advocate and student at Kingwood Middle School, I am deeply concerned about our use of Styrofoam lunch trays in the cafeteria. They are not only a hazard to our health but also wreak havoc on the environment. When hot food is placed on Styrofoam trays, they emit styrene, a compound associated with a high amount of carcinogens which can result in various health problems, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One of the risks mentioned includes memory, vision, and hearing loss due to high amounts of polystyrene in trays.
Moreover, discarded Styrofoam trays pile up in our landfills, contributing to the expanding waste problem. Styrofoam takes hundreds, if not thousands of years to decompose, creating long-term environmental damage.
In contrast, compostable trays are a healthier and more sustainable alternative. They are made from renewable resources, do not leak harmful chemicals into our food, and degrade within a few months when correctly composted. They represent a practical, real-world solution that will protect our health and environment while setting a meaningful precedent for other schools to follow.
The issue touches me deeply as I care for my peers' health and the future of our planet. I appeal you to support me in urging Kingwood Middle School to swap Styrofoam lunch trays with compostable trays. Make a statement for viably sustainable practices. It's time to act for our health and the environment. Please sign this petition.
