Replace MTSS with Library at Inter-American Magnet School

Replace MTSS with Library at Inter-American Magnet School
The Issue
As a group of deeply concerned parents, we have observed that our children's love of learning and excitement for school have been dimming. Our children at Inter-American Magnet School deserve to enjoy their special classes, rather than being confined to less stimulating activities such as coloring during MTSS special. MTSS, Multi-Tiered System of Support, which, instead of enriching student's development, has taken the place of our beloved Library class.
We are not saying MTSS isn't important, but categorizing it as a "special class" minimizes the importance of classes like Library, which provide students with essential reading and critical thinking skills. MTSS is a framework for students who need various interventions, the entire student population should not be forced to take part of MTSS. According to Illinois School Library Media Association, strong school library program help students perform better academically, and by not offering library as a class, we are doing a disservice to our children. This education gap becomes even more crucial considering the National Center for Education Statistics report which states that students who are more proficient in reading perform better in other academic areas too.
Our ask is simple. We demand a restructure in the allocation of 'special class' designations, reinstating Library, as a standalone course within the curriculum at the Inter-American Magnet School. By hiring a librarian instead of a MTSS instructor, we can equip our students with the skills they need to succeed in the future. Above all, let's let kids be kids and enjoy their specials. We request that all parents, community members, and stakeholders who understand the value of a well-rounded education join us. Please sign this petition and show your support.
