Replace 'Mr. Brightside' with 'Mr. Blue Sky' at Michigan Stadium
The Issue
I've been attending Michigan Football games at The Big House for decades, ever since I was a kid. There is nothing quite like the electric magic of 110,000+ fans coming together for a coordinated singalong on a sunny Saturday afternoon in Ann Arbor. It’s a special, unifying experience that makes game day at Michigan Stadium unmatched.
But every time "Mr. Brightside" comes on, that magic breaks for me. Don't get me wrong—it's a great pop song. But at its core, it’s a story about the painful realization of infidelity and jealousy. Screaming about a partner cheating on you while surrounded by families, young kids, and multi-generational fans just feels out of place and uncomfortable.
Instead, imagine the entire stadium erupting to Electric Light Orchestra’s "Mr. Blue Sky."
Beyond being a high-energy anthem that literally celebrates "Blue" (making it the ultimate natural fit for Maize and Blue football), it's a song already famous for pure joy—it's the exact same track Baby Groot danced to in the opening scene of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. It's fun, completely family-friendly, and something fans from age 5 to 85 can jump around and sing at the top of their lungs.
Replacing "Mr. Brightside" with "Mr. Blue Sky" isn't about destroying tradition; it's about upgrading it to something genuinely upbeat, positive, and built for The Big House.
