The Issue

Having lived in the area for 35 years, our family has personally witnessed the steady deterioration of Garfield Street, located between West Chicago and Westfield Street in Redford, Michigan. We've repeatedly reached out to Wayne County, making dozens of phone calls over the years to address the poor condition of the road. While asphalt has occasionally been applied as a temporary fix, its ongoing deterioration continues to cause significant damage to our vehicles. Every drive down this road becomes a potential risk to our safety and an added expense due to frequent car repairs.

Garfield Street serves as a critical thoroughfare for many residents and commuters. Its current state not only poses safety hazards but also undermines the quality of life and property values in our community. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, roads in poor conditions cost Michigan drivers approximately $644 each per year in extra vehicle operating costs. This statistic becomes even more personal when considering the frequent impact repairs have on residents of our street.

Concrete roads offer a durable, long-term solution compared to their asphalt counterparts. Studies show that concrete pavements can last 20-30 years longer than asphalt, potentially saving the community money in recurrent maintenance fees and frequent repairs. Additionally, concrete reflects light and can lead to safer driving conditions at night, an important factor given the residential nature of our neighborhood.

By replacing the current asphalt with concrete, Garfield Street can become safer, more reliable, and more cost-effective. This necessary improvement will not only protect our vehicles but also enhance our everyday driving experience and stimulate neighborhood cohesion by demonstrating a commitment to community welfare.

We urge Wayne County officials to prioritize this essential infrastructure upgrade. The transition to concrete would mark a significant investment in the longevity and prosperity of our community. Join us in our effort to make a lasting change for the betterment of Redford's residents. Please sign this petition to call for the immediate replacement of Garfield Street with new concrete and ensure a safer, more sustainable future for all who travel this road.
