Replace the Columbus Statue in Tower Grove Park with A Statue of Josephine Baker

The Issue

Josephine Baker was a Black, queer woman born in East St. Louis who became a groundbreaking and iconic performer in the 1920s. Her bold, original style made her one of the most loved and influential figures in entertainment of her generation. She was also a dedicated philanthropist and an activist against racism. I think that alone makes her worthy of a statue in our beautiful park, and an improvement on that spot in particular.

Additionally, I think a statue to her would honor our city’s French heritage. Paris was Josephine Baker’s second home and she even supported the allies in WW2 by working for the French resistance!

So, lets celebrate our city’s rich cultural history and historic French connection with a tribute to Josephine Baker. I hope you’ll consider signing this petition. :)
