The students at Scotch Plains Fanwood High School, remember how in middle school we could share, and enjoy eating together without the fear of being left out. However, the situation in our most populated space, the main cafeteria, is different and has caused distress to many, including my friends. The attached stool tables in this cafeteria have made isolation a common experience for several students, as the limited seating capacity has often meant that some of us are left sitting alone. Furthermore, research shows that social isolation during meals can adversely affect students' mental health (source: American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry).

Hence, we propose a switch towards bench lunch tables. Benches, unlike the attached stools, can accommodate more students per table, promoting inclusivity and reducing the instances of loneliness that currently plague our community.

We believe making this change is not just about revising seating arrangements; it's about creating an environment where everyone feels welcomed and included. Therefore, we request the school administration to replace the attached stool tables in the main cafeteria with bench tables. Sign the petition to lend your voice to this cause.
