Repeal the PG County Pit Bull Ban

The Issue

Hi, I'm Champ. Can you help me & other Pit Bulls find a safe & happy home in P.G. County?

This is an important issue in P.G. County because it's easy to see that the only people, & animals, this law punishes are responsible owners & good dogs. This Breed Specific Legislation really hasn't made a difference in Pit Bull ownership in the county. Pit Bulls are still all over the county.

The generalized demographic of people that the local gov't. wants to prevent from owning these dogs are criminals, but it's very, very rare that any "person" ever gets prosecuted, or in any trouble at all for owning a Pit Bull. It's always the dog that gets punished for being owned by some knucklehead. Usually what happens is the person is ordered to sign over the dog, & the dog is taken & euthanized. Then the same knucklehead the gov't. is trying to stop from owning a Pit Bull just goes out & gets another. Logically thinking, if he's a criminal what's it matter if he picks up a little misdemeanor & loses a dog? He'll pay a fine or do a short jail sentence, if anything is done at all, & he can always get another dog. If you step back & take a look at the situation with a sane, rational mind it's easy to see the only people being punished are the responsible dog owners. Not the criminals & irresponsible owners! There needs to be stiffer laws for those caught abusing & using dogs for illegal purposes. If you want to get a dog just to tie it up in the backyard & make it mean don't even bother getting one. Be a responsible dog owner & socialize your dog. Just like a child, how you raise them will determine what they become.

A quick fact I borrowed from a petition by Kirstyn Northrop Cobb:

In 2002 the American Temperament Testing Society statistics showed that American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers (both ‘Pit Bull breeds’) and Rotweillers passed the good temperament test +80% of the time. A very high passing grade! Other common family dogs did not fare as well. For example Golden Retreivers and Bichon Frise received a 77% rating, Chihuahuas and Lhasa Apsos received 71% (you can view the test results at the American Temperament Test Society

I could really use the help & support of PG Co. residents. If you live in, or are from, PG Co. please sign the petition. Then try to get just 5 more people to sign. There's approx. 875,000 people living in the county & all I'm asking for is just 10,000 signatures. Help make a change. Punish the deed, not the breed!

Thanks for your help, Champ the APBT
