As someone who deeply values the right to free speech, I am personally affected by the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act. This legislation, while intended to protect against hate crimes, has raised serious concerns about its impact on freedom of expression. The Law Society of Scotland has warned that the law's broad language could potentially criminalise expression of religious views or even jokes. Furthermore, a poll of 1,008 people conducted by Savanta ComRes found that 87% of Scots value protecting free speech. We must ensure that in our efforts to combat hate crimes we do not inadvertently stifle our cherished right to express ourselves freely.
