The Issue

Our demands need escalation!

India's IT and ITES industry generates enormous wealth, powers the digital economy and serves corporations across the world. Behind this success are 60 lakh employees whose skills, time, creativity and labour sustain the industry. Yet, for India's IT workforce, the reality is increasingly marked by job insecurity, forced resignations, stagnant wages, excessive working hours, stressful performance appraisals and inadequate social security protections..

In this background the Union of IT & ITES Employees (UNITE) is campaigning for the repeal of the four Labour Codes and a statutory regulation of the IT industry. For a long period employees have been demanding transparency, accountability and fairness on performance appraisal, job security and decent wages. All these demands have been conveniently ignored by the Union and State Governments for long.

On behalf of the IT and ITES Employees the union members are escalating this need by marching to Parliament in Delhi on December 1–2, 2026 to secure our life and livelihood, we call upon employees, students, trade unions, democratic organisations and patriotic citizens of this Nation to support these demands.

WHY MUST WE ACT NOW?

1. WORKING HOURS AND EMPLOYEES HEALTH

Long working hours, work extending beyond scheduled shifts, and the expectation of constant availability even after work hours have become serious concerns in the IT industry, putting employees physical and mental health at a seriously grave risk. The New Labour Codes Promotes and legalises this by extending the work hours to 12 hours per day or even beyond.

2. JOB SECURITY AND FORCED RESIGNATION

Employees must not be reduced to disposable resources. Performance appraisals, performance improvement plans(PIP) etc., are increasingly becoming instruments for forced resignation. IT Companies are on a retrenchment spree citing various reasons. At this juncture the New Labour Codes instead of protecting our jobs it increases the precarity by introducing Fixed-term employment.

3. REGULATION IN THE IT INDUSTRY

We are working and making our living in a time when the IT industry has no regulations and no enforcement of labour laws to protect us. The New Labour codes instead of strengthening the Labour department with more power to protect us, had stripped them of all powers reducing them to be facilitators and making it the Employer department by alienating the employees welfare in its purview.

4. WAGES, DIGNITY

The wages in the IT industry have remained stagnant over a few decades now while the inflation is sky high year on year bringing down the quality of life of every IT employee and their family, which severely affects the living standards. The New Labour code has no provisions to ensure fair bonus, variable pay, increments are provided and encourages the current practice of making the CEOs and CXOs richer day by day.

5. SOCIAL SECURITY

Every human must be entitled to social security, the IT and ITES employees even after contributing huge tax both direct and indirect toward the Nation's benefits are with almost no social security cover and are left broke. The Labour code has not improved the social security net to cover adverse health issues, retirement benefits etc.

We THEREFORE DEMAND TO

  • Repeal the four Labour Codes and protect Employees' hard-won rights.
  • Introduce effective statutory regulation of the IT and ITES industry.
  • Enact law for right to disconnect, over time protection and 6 working hours work day.
  • Severely punish companies for forcing employees to resign.
  • Regulate the appraisal process, BGV (Background verification), recruitment, PIP and Work From Home policies.
  • Ensure all disputes between employer and employee are closed and addressed with in 2 weeks time
  • Ensure adequate social security and safe, dignified working conditions for all IT and ITES Employees.

AMPLIFY BY ADDING YOUR VOICE. STAND WITH IT EMPLOYEES.

This is not merely an issue concerning one industry. It is a question of employees rights, dignity and the future of employment in India.

The technological revolution must not become an excuse for the exploitation of those who make it possible. The interests of employees cannot be sacrificed at the altar of corporate profits.
