The Issue

I'm a resident of Columbia, deeply concerned about the ability to maintain food security in this time of high cost inflation. With the rise in grocery prices nationwide, many fellow residents and I are seeking alternatives to feed our families effectively. One pragmatic solution lies in urban chicken farming, currently prohibited by our city's ordinances.

Urban chicken farming offers myriad benefits. It provides residents with a cost-effective source of nutrition, reduces reliance on heavily processed foods, promotes organic farming practices, and contributes to sustainability. Fast facts: backyard chickens consume food scraps thereby reducing household waste. They also produce manure that can be used as an excellent soil enricher.

Despite these glaring benefits, Columbia residents are barred from rearing chickens due to an ordinance enacted to control urban farming. The law, as it stands, is limiting opportunities for citizens to explore alternative food sources at a time when financial uncertainties are escalating.

We are fortunate that models for legal, urban chicken farming exist and have been successful in various cities across the country. Therefore, the challenge is not insurmountable. By reviewing and adjusting the ordinance, Columbia can foster a culture of self-sustainability and resilience.

It's time we amend our city ordinance to reflect the current socio-economic climate. We need to uphold the well-being of Columbia residents above all else.

I urge you to sign this petition to request that the city council review and modify the existing ordinance, thereby allowing urban chicken farming in Columbia's city limits. Let's harness our communal voice to create a more sustainable and cost-friendly future for all Columbians. Sign today.
