The Issue

Calvary Church Road is a vital route for many daily travelers in Swansea, SC. As someone who uses this road regularly, I have witnessed firsthand the deteriorating condition that poses a safety risk to all drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. The road is riddled with potholes, uneven surfaces, and poor drainage, which makes it hazardous, especially during inclement weather. Unfortunately, due to its deteriorated state, the road has become a source of frustration and danger for everyone who travels it.

Lexington County's Transportation Department, responsible for the maintenance of Calvary Church Road, must prioritize repaving to ensure the safety and well-being of all commuters. This issue is not just about convenience; it is about protecting lives and sustaining the local economy, which depends heavily on safe and efficient transportation infrastructure.

Taking immediate action to repave Calvary Church Road would demonstrate a commitment to public safety and economic stability in our community. Our community deserves better, and it is time to address this critical issue with the urgency it demands.

Join us in calling for the crucial repaving of Calvary Church Road by signing this petition. Every signature counts and moves us closer to a safer, smoother, and more efficient roadway for everyone.

Thank you to everyone who has signed and supported this petition calling for repairs to Calvary Church Road. I understand and share your concerns about the condition of this roadway. An expert assessment recently determined that our county needs an estimated $400 million in road repairs. Unfortunately, the state provides only about $6 million annually to maintain state roads such as Calvary Church Road. The remainder of the responsibility falls to the county—or requires the state to prioritize a specific project. At the county level, there are two main solutions available to fund road projects like this: 1) Raise property taxes – though this has already been stretched thin. 2) Adopt a “penny tax” – a one-cent sales tax applied to all non-food and non-pharmaceutical purchases within the county. This has been adopted by all the surrounding counties as an effective solution. If adopted, the penny tax could include a sunset provision of 8 years and could generate approximately $60 million annually—a total of $480 million over the life of the tax. This revenue would more than cover the costs of repairing Calvary Church Road and allow for additional investments in other critical infrastructure needs. It’s important to note, however, that this tax requires voter approval. To date, it has been placed on the ballot twice and was defeated both times. I remain committed to working toward solutions that address our infrastructure challenges while being mindful of the financial impact on residents. Your voices are important in this conversation, and I encourage you to continue engaging as we explore the path forward. Sincerely, Darrell Hudson
