The Issue

We urge the swift repair of the Rt. 62 bridge in Mason County, which has been closed indefinitely. This closure significantly disrupts the daily lives of the local community. The Rt. 62 bridge was a vital artery connecting communities, and its closure has turned a previously short 5-minute drive to Point Pleasant into a lengthy 30+ minute detour. This inaccessibility severely impacts residents, particularly the vulnerable elderly population, who may have trouble reaching essential services and social activities.

Moreover, the closure is affecting local education. Mason County reports more than 20 students whose education is disrupted, with approximately 16 of these children lacking any alternative route to school, preventing them from attending. This education gap is unacceptable and threatens the academic progress and well-being of our children.

We are frustrated by the lack of clarity regarding the repair timeline. Authorities have yet to provide a definitive schedule, with estimates ranging from weeks to months. This uncertainty exacerbates the issues for families, commuters, and everyone relying on this bridge.

The swift repair of the Rt. 62 bridge is essential to restoring normalcy and ensuring the safety and accessibility for all residents, particularly those unable to navigate the long detours.

We call on the state and local governments to prioritize this infrastructure project and allocate necessary resources to expedite the repairs. This will restore critical roads for our community, support the education of our children, and ensure that the elderly can safely and easily access necessary services.

Your support in signing this petition will help signal to state and local officials the urgency of this matter. Please join us in urging them to take immediate action and rectify this pressing issue.

Thank you for your [petition] regarding your concerns with the bridge closure on WV Route 62, in Mason County, to the West Virginia Division of Highways. Stefan White, District One Maintenance Manager, reviewed your concerns on March 31, 2026. To ensure the safety of the traveling public, we recently had to temporarily close WV 62 to construct a temporary bridge. We are pleased to report that the route was reopened to traffic as of March 20, 2026. Our next step is to install a permanent structure. We are currently awaiting the delivery of materials, which we expect in approximately four to six weeks. Once the materials arrive, we will quickly install the permanent bridge. This will require another temporary road closure; however, if the installation goes as planned, this closure should last less than one week. Because the temporary bridge is now in place, we will be able to provide the public with advanced warning and clear guidance ahead of this upcoming closure. We understand these closures are an inconvenience, and we sincerely appreciate your patience as we work to maintain and improve our transportation system. Again, thank you for emailing and sharing your concerns. Should you require additional information and/or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Stefan White, District One Maintenance Manager, at (304) 558-3001
