The Issue

My children and others in our community rely on Lisha Kill Pocket Park to play, learn, and grow. But recently, a distressing incident has impacted the joyful experience the park is meant to offer. The playground equipment here, specifically meant for small children and toddlers, has been vandalized with inappropriate words and burn holes on the slides and structures - a hazardous situation endangering the safety and wellbeing of our little ones.

With the current state of the damaged equipment, parents are concerned and hesitant to bring their children to the Lisha Kill Pocket Park. This decline not only affects our children’s playtime but also limits their physical and social growth opportunities offered by play.

Statistics from the National Recreation and Park Association reveal that children who engage in regular playground activities show improved social skills and physical health. With the current playground conditions, we risk stripping our children of these vital development aspects.

This park also lacks essential amenities like swings for smaller children and toddlers, which are crucial for diverse and inclusive play. The absence of these structures means parents must travel further to find suitable alternatives, depriving our local community of a complete child-friendly environment.

The need is urgent, and repairing the existing equipment is just the start. There must be installation of additional play structures tailored to diverse age groups and abilities. There is also a need for increased security measures such as community watch or better lighting to prevent further vandalism.

To the Colonie Town Council and local representatives: we urge you to prioritize the repair of damaged equipment and the installation of additional play structures at Lisha Kill Pocket Park. This investment is not merely an expenditure, it is a commitment to fostering a robust, safe, and inclusive community where every child gets the chance to freely play in a secure environment.

Let us ensure that all children in our community have a safe place to play. Sign this petition to make Lisha Kill Pocket Park a safer, happier spot for all our children.
