U.S. government's new emergency Ebola hospital must not exclude Liberia's infected health workers.
The Issue
The United States government has announced a $22-million, 25-bed field hospital to be built in Liberia, to help save lives of health workers battling the Ebola outbreak there. But the USAID and Pentagon project will pointedly exclude Liberian health care workers, and will only serve infected foreign aid workers.
We demand that the U.S. legislators tasked with overseeing this spending see to it that all health care workers fighting this horrific outbreak have equal access to the resources Americans are providing.
We call on the members of the Untied States House Committee on Foreign Affairs -- Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations -- to go on record demanding the United States never deny emergency care to any health care worker when treating this epidemic, let alone those Liberians valiantly struggling to stop this disease in their own country.
That the United States would deploy a fully equipped clinic to Liberia, and yet reserve it's use for only Europeans and other foreigners, is insulting to Liberians, and embarrassing to Americans. We call on each of these elected subcommittee members to speak out on this issue.
Rep. Christopher H. Smith (R-NJ)
Rep. Tom Marino (PA)
Rep. Randy K. Weber Sr. (TX)
Rep. Steve Stockman (TX)
Rep. Mark Meadows (NC)
Rep. Karen Bass (CA)
Rep. David Cicilline (RI)
Rep. Ami Bera (CA)
