The Issue

The closure of the Southwest Oklahoma Juvenile Center in Manitou has left a significant gap in the juvenile justice system in Oklahoma. With the recent crisis perceived at the Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center, there is an urgent need to reconsider reopening this facility.

The Southwest Oklahoma Juvenile Center was more than just a building; it served as a vital resource for rehabilitation and guidance for troubled youths in the region. The specific focus on personalized and comprehensive care provided a robust environment conducive to reform and education for many juveniles who had lost their way. Its closure has increased the strain on other facilities, which are now overstretched and unable to adequately support the rising number of youths in need.

Recent reports have shown that the Central Oklahoma Juvenile Center, currently overburdened, is unable to handle the type of juveniles requiring support. This unparalleled stress on the system compromises the quality of care, effectively reducing the chances of successful rehabilitation. By reopening the facility in Manitou, we can more evenly distribute the youth needing care, effectively using our resources to provide better service and outcomes.

Reinitiating operations at the Southwest Oklahoma Juvenile Center will not only alleviate the current crisis in the central region but also bring much-needed employment opportunities to Manitou and the surrounding areas. Historically, the center provided numerous jobs, directly influencing the local economy.

We urge the Oklahoma State authorities to protect our future by investing in the reopening of the Southwest Oklahoma Juvenile Center. Please join us in this critical plea to restore balance and care in our juvenile justice system by signing this petition. The community and former employees of Southwest Oklahoma Juvenile Center would like to be able to continue our mission in helping the youth and our communities.
