Reopen the ex-HMAS Adelaide artificial reef now
The issue
It's been two long years since the closure of the ex-HMAS Adelaide artificial reef, a beloved diving site off the coast of New South Wales. Local divers like myself, tourism operators, and associated businesses have all been left in limbo, with no reopening date in sight. This site has not only been a haven for marine life but also a critical hotspot for boosting local tourism and the economy. Yet, it remains inaccessible because of deemed "unsafe" conditions.
We understand the importance of safety, but we also demand transparency and accountability from the NSW government. There’s been no clear evidence presented to substantiate the closure, no published remediation timetable, and most disappointingly, not a shred of meaningful progress. We deserve to know why the site remains closed and what actions are being taken to remedy the situation.
The loss of this iconic dive site has dealt a significant economic blow to dive centres, charter operators, dive clubs and the wider tourism industry. The Adelaide was more than just another dive site; it was a major attraction, drawing divers from across Australia and beyond to experience its spectacular marine life, underwater beauty and unique artificial reef environment.
We ask the NSW government: where are the answers? Show us the evidence that supports this closure, publish a comprehensive works schedule, or, at the very least, investigate possibilities for allowing controlled diving in areas deemed safe. We shouldn’t have to deal with vague reassurances and endless reports that seem to lead nowhere.
This isn’t just about a dive site; it’s about communities dependent on tourism, it’s about our deep connection to nature, and it’s about having a transparent government that keeps its communities informed.
Join us in urging the NSW government to take immediate action and provide the much-needed clarity and solution-oriented plans we deserve. Sign this petition to demand answers, a schedule for remediation, or evaluate the possibility of controlled access to the site. Share this cause and help us reach out to as many people as possible, so we, together, can make a significant impact. Let’s hold those in charge accountable and demand the reopening of the ex-HMAS Adelaide.
