Reopen the Billie-Jo Jenkins murder investigation
The Issue
On 15 February 1997, the life of a bright, young teenager was tragically cut short. Billie-Jo Jenkins, only 13 years old, was brutally murdered on the rear patio of her family home in Hastings, East Sussex. This horrific crime shook not just her family, but the entire community to its core. Billie-Jo was an innocent young girl, full of dreams and potential, taken away in the most violent way one can imagine—bludgeoned at least nine times with a heavy iron tent peg while she was painting the patio doors. The brutality of her death demands justice, not just as a duty to her memory but also to reassure the faith of the entire Hastings community and beyond.
After a series of grueling trials and controversial legal proceedings that spanned almost a decade, Billie-Jo’s foster father, initially convicted, was acquitted in 2006 due to the contentious nature of forensic blood-spatter evidence used in his trial. Despite the available evidence and public interest, no other individual has been held accountable for her murder. This is nothing short of a miscarriage of justice. We need to ensure that Billie-Jo's case is not forgotten, swept under the rug, or marked as a 'cold case'. Her family deserves closure, and our community demands credible answers and accountability.
This petition calls upon the Home Office and the Sussex Police to reopen the investigation into Billie-Jo Jenkins’ murder. There have been significant advancements in forensic technology and investigative techniques over the past two decades. DNA testing, which may not have been available or thoroughly utilized at the time, has the potential to shed new light on the evidence.
Moreover, public engagement and pressure can often help renew interest and resources into cases long considered inactive. Through collaborative efforts between law enforcement, forensic scientists, and the affected community, we can work to ensure justice is not denied.
We cannot allow this grave injustice to linger; every day without an answer is a day where Billie-Jo's voice remains silent. This investigation must be given new life, with a fresh pair of eyes and modern forensic techniques, to bring the true perpetrator to justice.
Join us in demanding justice for Billie-Jo Jenkins. Sign this petition to call for a renewed investigation and help us deliver closure and justice to her family and the community that continues to mourn her loss. Together, let us stand up for what is right and ensure that Billie-Jo’s story does not remain untold and unresolved.
