The Issue

Having lived in Ventura, California for 40 years, I've witnessed the vibrant transformation and evolution of our community. However, the recent closure of Main Street to vehicular traffic has caused a strain on the very fabric of what makes Ventura thrive – its local businesses and its inclusive community environment. Our long-time businesses are struggling, and accessibility for disabled individuals is severely limited. This is not just an inconvenience; it's a disruption to the livelihoods of many residents and entrepreneurs who have invested their lives in ensuring Ventura prospers.

The city council is proposing to invest millions to keep Main Street closed to cars, funding that Ventura simply cannot afford. These millions, which are intended to create pedestrian-friendly spaces, could be allocated to other critical areas that need attention. There are streets and medians throughout Ventura that desperately require maintenance and repairs. By prioritizing these, we can take care of the entire city, making it safer and more appealing for residents and visitors alike.

From an economic perspective, reopening Main Street to cars is vital. Without access to vehicular traffic, many customers are either unable or unwilling to visit, leading to declining sales and foot traffic. Our local businesses form the heart of Ventura's economy, and their sustenance is paramount to preserving the city's charm and financial health. When businesses suffer, so do the job opportunities and economic stability of our city.

Moreover, reopening Main Street doesn't preclude enhancements to pedestrian areas—these can coexist. Attractive solutions that blend pedestrian-friendly zones with vehicular access can be sought, ensuring that the city's development is inclusive and considers the needs of all Ventura residents.

Join me in calling on the Ventura City Council to reconsider their plans and re-open Main Street to vehicular traffic, allowing it to thrive once more. Let’s ensure that funds are wisely spent to address Ventura's broader infrastructural needs, fostering a community where all can coexist and flourish. Sign the petition to support a balanced and prosperous Ventura.
