The Issue

Residents of Tallahassee, Florida, and surrounding areas should be able to enjoy better access to quality sports facilities. Florida State University (FSU) and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) possess excellent track and field facilities, which remain underutilized, especially during off-hours. By opening these facilities to the public when not in use, we can greatly alleviate the pressure on Leon County Schools, which currently shoulder the entire burden of providing public access to track and field amenities.

Working in harmony with these universities, Leon County can distribute resources efficiently and encourage a healthier community. According to research by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), regular physical activity contributes significantly to reducing the risk of chronic diseases, improves mental health, and promotes overall quality of life. Accessing well-maintained facilities can greatly enhance participation, particularly among communities that might not have the financial means to invest in health and fitness opportunities themselves.

What's more, adopting such an initiative reflects broader community engagement and fosters positive relationships between the universities and the local residents. FSU and FAMU can serve as partners in promoting public health and wellness. Opening their tracks during off-hours would not only optimize the use of existing resources but also establish these universities as inclusive and supportive community figures.

We urge Florida State University and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University to consider this suggestion. The tracks would only be available during designated off-hours, ensuring that they remain accessible for university athletic needs while serving the community.

Your support is vital. By signing this petition, you're voicing the need for better public access to recreational resources in Tallahassee. Help us create a stronger community where health and wellness are top priorities. Sign now to turn this vision into reality.
