I am a resident of Dewsbury, and I've witnessed the detrimental effects of our local leisure centre's closure on our community. Since its doors closed, there has been a noticeable increase in anti-social behaviour. This is not the vibrant, friendly neighbourhood we once knew.

Our older adults are suffering too. Without access to the leisure centre's facilities, many are experiencing a decline in their mental and physical health. The British Heart Foundation states that regular physical activity can reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 35% and decrease depression risk by up to 30% (British Heart Foundation). Our leisure centre was more than just a building; it was a lifeline for many.

The closure of leisure centers has disproportionately affected women who find themselves trapped in abusive relationships. These centers offered a vital escape, providing support, empowerment, and a pathway to healing. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that these services are protected and adequately funded. Together, let us take a stand against gender abuse and create a society where every individual, regardless of their circumstances, can live a life free from fear and control.

Moreover, other leisure centres are simply inaccessible for many residents due to distance or cost factors. We need our local facility back - it played an integral role in keeping our community healthy and connected.
