The Issue

Some of the old buildings of Trinity Academy are being demolished, and the road alongside has been closed since June 2025 with closure expected to last until at least August 2028. The closure of Craighall Road was not discussed nor notification given to residents and businesses until hours before the closure, and after the schools had ended for summer negating the excuse of pupil safety. The Trinity & Newhaven Community Council, along with residents, were not consulted on the closure. Emergency vehicles still attempt to use the road, and a minute spent in a detour could mean the difference between life and death for someone waiting for an ambulance.

Additionally, cyclists and motorbikes have been using the pavement beside the building site, which has been putting members of the public at risk.

Residents and businesses are reporting increased theft in the area as gangs of masked youths gain access to establishments, escaping past the building site where no police cars are able to give chase. This is causing a significant amount of fear and alarm in the area, and people are understandably distressed by the serious lack of council support and transparency on how the road closure was pushed through with almost nonexistent notice to local residents.

No other school renovation has required the closure of nearby roads for three years, but claims that “the health and safety of students would be at risk while crossing the road around the site”, have been cited.  However, as some residents have pointed out, “there would be no greater risk than usual, especially since people have taken to biking along the pavement instead.” It should also be noted that these are not young children but young adults who should be more responsible and aware. In consequence to the closure, the increased traffic flow to Newhaven Road and Whale Brae is now putting the even younger students of the primary school at risk as cars and large vans charge along the road at great speed.

Residents have voiced concerns that it forms a dangerous precedent for this to happen elsewhere, repeatedly. Given the tram consultation recently closing, and the council having continued their bullish plans to force through new tram lines, many more have agreed that the unilateral decisions being made by the council without consultation of the people who would be most affected, does indeed set a dangerous precedent.

There are two serious points of contention to the road being closed - firstly, what was done and the nature to how it has been implemented, and secondly, the intensive impact on the surrounding areas such as Stanley Road, Newhaven Road and Trinity Road as well as the significant increase in congestion along Ferry Road.

Please add your signature to show how important it is that Craighall Road be reopened and to ensure that this type of closure does not happen again, especially without consultation with the community at large.

Thank you for your support.
