Reopen Cook’s Corner Carryout – A Youngstown Legacy Worth Saving
Reopen Cook’s Corner Carryout – A Youngstown Legacy Worth Saving
The Issue
For more than three decades, Cook’s Corner Carryout has been more than just a place to grab a meal—it has been the heart of a community.
Founded in 1994 in Youngstown, Ohio, by husband and wife Freeman and Mary Cook, this beloved family-owned restaurant at 103 Willis Avenue became a daily gathering place for neighbors, families, and friends. Known for its delicious Southern-style cooking, Cook’s Corner served up more than lunches, dinners, and snacks—it served comfort, connection, and care.
Children walking home from school stopped by for a bite and a smile. Elderly, handicapped, and infirm residents relied on the Cooks’ kindness, receiving warm meals delivered right to their doors. For many, Cook’s Corner was not just convenient—it was essential.
Today, that legacy is at risk.
Following the passing of co-owner Freeman Cook, the restaurant was forced to temporarily close its doors. Now, as the family works to reopen and continue what Freeman and Mary built together, they are facing an unexpected and heartbreaking obstacle: the City of Youngstown has re-designated the area from a business zone to a residential zone and is not willing to allow the restaurant to reopen at its longtime location.
This decision threatens to erase a cherished institution that has served and uplifted this community for over 30 years.
We believe Cook’s Corner Carryout deserves to reopen.
We believe in supporting small, family-owned businesses that give back to their communities.
We believe in preserving the places that bring people together.
And we believe the Cook family should have the opportunity to continue their legacy.
We respectfully call on the City of Youngstown to reconsider this decision and allow Cook’s Corner Carryout to reopen at 103 Willis Avenue.
By signing this petition, you are standing up for community, compassion, and tradition.
Let your voice be heard.
Please sign and share this petition before March 14, 2026.
Together, we can bring Cook’s Corner back—right where it belongs.
