Urgent: Reopen Cambourne Place onto Durham Road and Restore Two Lanes at Five Bridges Roundabout
Traffic congestion around Prince Consort Road, Durham Road and the surrounding Gateshead neighbourhoods has reached a critical level, causing serious delays and disruption to residents, businesses and everyday journeys.

Cambourne Place previously allowed vehicles to travel directly from Prince Consort Road onto Durham Road, providing convenient access between neighbouring residential areas, schools, shops and local amenities. Its closure has forced unnecessary diversions and was already contributing to congestion before the Gateshead flyover closed.

The subsequent flyover closure, combined with the reduction to a single traffic lane near Five Bridges Roundabout, has considerably worsened the situation, particularly during peak hours.

While cyclist safety is important, the apparently limited cyclist usage raises reasonable questions about whether closing this useful road connection was proportionate, given the disruption to hundreds of residents and the public expenditure involved.

We urgently ask Gateshead Council to make two specific road changes:

Reopen Cambourne Place to vehicular traffic, restoring the direct connection from Prince Consort Road onto Durham Road and improving access between neighbouring communities.
Restore the two traffic lanes approaching Five Bridges Roundabout, rather than restricting vehicles to a single lane, with suitable arrangements to maintain both lanes even while the ongoing roadworks continue.
We also request that the council review the combined impact of these restrictions and the flyover closure, and provide transparency regarding the costs and evidence supporting the original decisions.

These practical changes could provide much-needed relief to local residents and motorists while maintaining appropriate road safety measures.
