The walls of the prison cells in No.2 Division of Boggo Road Gaol are covered in authentic 1980s graffiti left by some of the last prisoners who served time in them. In earlier eras prisoners rarely damaged marked their walls - as they would get extra prison time for damaging Her Majesty's or His Majesty's property (depending on the era).
Not so historic is the modern graffiti being left on the outside of the prison. The image above is a recent one sent in by a dismayed local resident. It is of the door to the iconic tower seen from Annerley Road. The image is low resolution so readers are not exposed to what has been written. The door has been tagged, covered in verses, words and swearing - which have been sprayed and physically etched into the metal surface. Somehow multiple perpetrators have been able to do this undetected.
Recently, Youtubers broke into the prison and filmed for hours undetected, and uploaded their escapades online. The site looks abandoned with few people around; during the week workers cars have been parked literally up against the prison gates. This is attracting undesirable behaviour. We at Boggo Road Gaol are so upset at this situation. Our presence at the Gaol was a deterent and building respect for the prison's important history. This is a heritage-listed site. It needs to be open to the public. Please support our petition to have the Gaol reopened for our guided tours, events and functions.
