The historic Binalong railway station is falling into a state of significant disrepair. The 1915-era station once served the still bustling Sydney to Melbourne main line. The station was unfortunately closed in 1989 and was quickly forgotten about by the NSW state government. If no action is taken, the station buildings will face further vandalism and eventual demolition, like so many other historic railway stations across the state in recent times.

Furthermore, there are towns in regional NSW with smaller populations that have retained their railway stations. The people of Binalong as well as the surrounding communities in Boorowa, Galong, Goondah, Berremangra and Illalong Creek would greatly benefit from a reopened train station at Binalong. A functioning station would make the Binalong area safer and more environmentally friendly by reducing road accidents and making it less reliant on cars and buses. According to the current NSW TrainLink timetable, the station has the potential to be served by two daily Sydney to Melbourne XPT passenger train services in each direction as well as the twice weekly Griffith service each way.
