As a student at Tappan Middle School, I can personally testify to the difficulty that many of us face in trying to find an open bathroom during the school day. This issue affects not just me, but many other students in our 700-strong population of middle-schoolers. Closing bathrooms during the day disrupts our learning process by causing unnecessary stress and waste of valuable time. It is also a violation of our basic human rights, guaranteed to us by the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which includes the right to use a restroom when needed. Every day that this policy continues, students are denied these rights, which are particularly important during these formative years of our lives when maintaining a good and comfortable learning environment is paramount. We urge the Tappan Middle School administration to review and reconsider this policy, for the sake of the health, welfare, and academic success of all students.
