I am a student at Shakopee East Middle School and daily, I see the consequences of inadequate facilities. Our school, a pillar of the community, is falling apart and requires immediate attention. East Middle School, which has nurtured several successful individuals, is now in dire straits due to a lack of renovation and upkeep. The overall safety and quality of education are being compromised as we learn in a school that's struggling to stay intact. The time to act is now.

It's estimated that US schools need $197 billion in capital investment for renovations to provide safe and healthy school facilities (21st Century School Fund, 2016). Unfortunately, East Middle School is part of that statistic. A quality learning environment is a fundamental right of every student, yet the current state of our school threatens this basic provision.

Whether you are an alumnus, a concerned parent or simply a member of the community, it's time to stand up and push for positive change in East Middle School. It's time to ensure the students of today, and those of generations to come, have access to a quality education in a safe, updated environment.
