Renovate Bowery Station and Keep It Safe and Clean
The Issue
Bowery Station on the J line is my home station, and I am not exaggerating when I say it has gotten out of control. On certain days, the station is filled with more homeless people than actual commuters. Some of them sitting on chairs in the stairs area, making the space feel more like anything but a subway stop people are supposed to safely use to get home. It is dirty, it feels neglected, and every time I pass through it I am reminded that riders have been left to deal with conditions nobody should have to accept.
This is bigger than one annoying commute. Bowery is used by people who live here, work here, and depend on the train every day, and nobody should feel like they have to avoid their own station or pay for a taxi because the platform feels unsafe and unsanitary. When a station gets this bad, it sends the message that the people who use it do not matter. That is not acceptable for our city.
I am calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and New York City Transit to immediately clean up Bowery station, repair what has been allowed to fall apart, increase regular maintenance, and make sure riders can use this station without feeling unsafe or sick. This is not about ignoring people in crisis. It is about making the station functional, clean, and safe while connecting people who need help with real services instead of leaving everyone in a bad situation.
If Bowery is going to stay open and serve this neighborhood, then it needs real action, not more neglect. Riders should not have to choose between getting where they need to go and protecting their own health and peace of mind. Let’s make Bowery a safe and useable station for everyone at all times of the day. Please sign this petition if you agree Bowery station deserves immediate attention and real change.
