The Issue

Woodrow Wilson, the namesake of our high school in Beckley, WV, has a troubling legacy that troubles many in our community. Known for his segregationist policies, support for the Confederacy, and role in the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, Wilson’s presidency stands as a regrettable chapter in American history. It’s high time our school reflects values that align with the progress we've made as a society.

On the other hand, Theodore Roosevelt, despite his imperfections and being a product of his time, offered a far more progressive vision for America. His contributions towards conservation, his role in breaking up monopolies to ensure fair competition, and his advocacy for a 'Square Deal' for all Americans speak volumes about his commitment to positive change.

Renaming our high school is more than just a change of signage; it’s a powerful statement of the values we wish to instill in our students and our community. It's about acknowledging a flawed past while choosing to honor someone who, despite his age's limitations, worked towards betterment.

Theodore Roosevelt High would not only honor a president who worked tirelessly to improve the nation but also serve as a beacon for the values of perseverance, courage, and progressive change.

Let us come together to continue making Beckley a place that looks forward and grows. Let’s rename our high school to Theodore Roosevelt High and set a new standard of greatness for future generations. Please sign this petition to make this meaningful change happen.
