The recent name change of the former Washington Redskins to the Washington Commanders was a step acknowledging that certain mascot names can be offensive. While there are advocates on both sides, it appears the Redskins name is not coming back. However, we believe there is an opportunity here not just to remove harm, but also to actively honor Native American culture. We propose renaming the team as "Washington Blackfeet," in tribute to one of the most prominent indigenous tribes in North America. In 1971, Walter Wetzel, a Blackfeet tribal council member, created the Washington Redskins logo. He used Two Guns White Calf's image as the basis for the logo.The Blackfeet Nation has a rich history and culture that deserves recognition and respect. This move would not only be symbolic but also educational, raising awareness about this important part of our nation's heritage (source: National Congress of American Indians). Let's turn a new page in sports history by showing respect for our native cultures rather than appropriating them.
