In May 2020, tragedy struck when Shad and his son were caught in a dangerous rip current while swimming at Venice Beach. Despite facing imminent danger himself, Shad selflessly instructed lifeguards to save his son first.

Tragically, Shad lost his own life during this heroic act. His bravery and love for his child exemplify what it means to be a true warrior both inside and outside of the wrestling ring.

The current Warrior Award is named after an individual who has been revealed as having racist and homophobic tendencies. It is disheartening that such recognition is associated with someone whose actions contradict values of inclusivity, respect, and equality.

By renaming this award in honor of Shad Gaspard, we can celebrate a man who embodied all these values throughout his life. Not only did he entertain millions with his incredible athleticism in WWE but he also showed us what it truly means to be selfless and courageous.

We understand that renaming an award requires careful consideration from those responsible for making this decision. However, we firmly believe that honoring someone like Shad Gaspard will inspire future generations by highlighting acts of heroism beyond just athletic achievements.
