The name 'New Mexico' has proudly served the people of the state since its adoption in 1912. Advocates suggest a change to 'New America', arguing it is a name which reflects the diversity, inclusivity, and forward-thinking nature of the current population. Unlike the other 50 states, New Mexico is the only one that shares its name with a foreign nation (specifically, it borders Mexico), leading to occasional confusions. 

In a 2012 survey, 32% of Americans are unaware that New Mexico is part of the United States (National Geographic Society), highlighting the need for an unambiguous name. Renaming the state to New America would establish an unmistakable identity- representing a state that is both diverse and undeniably American.
