The Issue

The Ross Collins Career & Technical Center in Meridian, Mississippi, bears the name of a politician who was known for his white supremacist views and actions. It is imperative that our educational institutions reflect values that align with equality, inclusiveness, and progress. The continued association with a figure who promoted divisive and harmful ideologies is not only inappropriate but also counterproductive to fostering a learning environment that respects and values all individuals.

Ross Collins was a political figure whose legacy is stained with support for segregationist policies and white supremacy. By maintaining his name on an educational center, we inadvertently uphold his ideals and tarnish the educational narrative that should be focused on unity and mutual respect. Schools and educational centers must be places where every student feels welcomed and valued, irrespective of their background. Retaining the name Ross Collins is a direct contradiction to these principles.

Changing the name of the center is not an attempt to rewrite history but rather an opportunity to correct past mistakes and make a conscious decision to honor individuals who have made positive contributions to society - individuals who have stood for justice, equality, and human rights. There are countless local heroes from Meridian and the broader Mississippi area whose values better reflect the community's aspirations and whom students can look up to as role models.

We propose a community-led initiative to select a new name for the Career & Technical Center that aligns with the values of diversity and inclusion. This would involve input from students, educators, community leaders, and residents, ensuring that the new name resonates with the collective identity and values of the community.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for an educational environment free from the shadows of racism and prejudice. Join us in taking this vital step toward creating a more inclusive and equitable future for all students in Meridian. Your support is crucial in making this change possible. Please sign and share this petition to show your support for a new name for the Ross Collins Career & Technical Center that embodies the values of equality and inclusiveness.
