Rename the Medical Term "Micropenis" to a More Respectful Designation

The Issue

My name is Michael Phillips, and I live with a condition medically termed as "Micropenis." Due to this term's derogatory connotation, I feel it imposes unnecessary additional pain and stigma to people like me grappling with the condition. This is a personal plea for us to advocate for change in the healthcare community to rename the term "Micropenis" to a more respectful designation.

I have done news articles about my condition

The term in question has been used in the medical world for years to describe a penis that is 2.5 standard deviations smaller than the mean human penis size.Healthcare providers determine micropenis size by the stretched penile length (SPL). The proper way to establish the SPL is to gently stretch the penis, hold it close to the body and measure it from tip to base of the penis. Providers diagnose micropenis if the length is less than 2.5 standard deviations below the average. For example:

The average stretched penile length (SPL) for adult males is 5.25 inches. An SPL of 3.67 inches or less indicates an adult micropenis.

However, it's not just the physical size that this term is defining. The societal implications of such a name create negative psychological impacts on the individuals living with this condition.

Renaming this term could significantly reduce the stigma associated with the condition. We believe medical terminologies should respect all patients' dignity and steer clear from any possible derogatory or offending terminologies. After all, being sensitive to others' experiences is a fundamental part of humanity.

We urge the World Health Organization and respective Medical Boards to take this matter seriously. Let's eliminate these lingering stigmas in our society and make our medical world more respecting and understanding.

We count on your signatures to encourage this important change. Together, we can bring about a more inclusive and respectful society. Please signal your support and sign this petition.
