The Issue

Matthew Packard-Asai was not just a name known among a few, but a resonating voice within the Kapa’a community, especially among skaters. Matt was an enthusiastic skater whose passion and energy for the sport were contagious. His frequent visits to the Kapa’a Skate Park made him a regular fixture, someone everyone recognized and loved for his dedication and skill. To many in the community, Matt was more than just a skater; he was a mentor, a friend, and above all, a beloved member of a tightly-knit skating family.

Tragically, Matt's life was cut short, leaving many in our community heartbroken. However, his spirit lives on in every ollie, kickflip, and big air performed at the skate park. We believe that renaming the Kapa’a skate park to "Matthew Packard Asai Memorial Skatepark" would be a fitting tribute to his memory and his contributions to the community he cherished. Such an honor would not only preserve Matt’s legacy within the hearts of those who knew him but also inspire future generations of skaters to follow in his passionate footsteps.

Renaming the skate park would symbolize his enduring impact on our community. It would serve as a constant reminder of the vibrant life he led and the passion he instilled in others through his love of skating. We call upon the local authorities and park management to take this step in recognizing a community hero in the way he so richly deserves.

Please support this cause by signing the petition. Let us ensure that Matthew Packard Asai's legacy skates on forever in the heart of Kapa’a.
