The Issue

Growing up in the Alisal neighborhood of Salinas, the library has been more than just a building to me—it's been a beacon of knowledge, a safe haven, and a cherished part of my community life. My journey with the library started when I was a student at Alisal Elementary. Back then, it was the place where my imagination soared through the pages of the books I borrowed, where I spent countless afternoons immersed in stories that took me to distant worlds. Those memories have stayed with me throughout my life, forming a deep and lasting connection with this vital community resource.

We now have the opportunity to celebrate the unique identity of the Alisal neighborhood by renaming the Cesar Chavez Library to "The Alisal Library." This change would reflect the spirit, history, and culture of Alisal, which deserve to be highlighted in the very institutions that serve our community so profoundly.

The U.S. Census Bureau and local studies have consistently shown that Alisal is a growing and evolving community, marked by cultural diversity and a shared history that deserves acknowledgment and celebration in public spaces. Changing the library's name to the Alisal Library would honor this heritage and align the library more closely with the community it serves.

I urge you to support this important initiative. Let's come together to honor our heritage and embrace the future with a name that truly represents the heart of our community. Please sign this petition to make "The Alisal Library" a reality, for today and for future generations. Thank you for standing with us.
