Rename the Beryl Grant Community Centre in Albany, Western Australia

Rename the Beryl Grant Community Centre in Albany, Western Australia
The issue
Albany's Beryl Grant Community Centre is named after the Matron of Western Australia's most prolific mother and baby home, Ngala. During her 20 years at the helm of the former forced adoption insitution located in Perth, Matron Grant facilited a reported 2000 adoptions.
Albany is home to many Ngala survivors; mothers, adopted people who were seperated from each other as a direct consequence of Matron Grants' faciliation of forced adoption practices. A highly influencial and powerful woman, Matron Grant operated free from oversight by relevant parties. Many regard her as the 'baby thief' of Western Australia.
Survivors of this dark part of Australia's history can not be expected to see Grant's name every time they drive past the building or see the street signs. This is a harmful psychological trigger for many Ngala survivors of forced adoption.
We request that Juniper Aged Care considers the importance of trauma imformed practices and renames the centre after Menang Elder Bessy Flowers, who was a teacher, writer and early advocate for her community.
