Marching on 50 Years Later

This weekend, on the 50th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, President Barack Obama stood at the foot of the Edmund Pettus bridge and gave a rousing call to America: finish the movement started by our foot soldiers. As we listened to President Obama’s words describing the injustices that persist in our society today, we could not help but notice that he was standing under the name ‘Edmund Pettus’ as he spoke. Honoring Pettus’ legacy is an injustice; it represents hatred and oppression, which are not the ideals we believe should represent the people of Selma. Listening to the President speak today at the bridge reminded us that we never want to forget what happened in Selma during the civil rights movement. It also reminded us of who should be honored and celebrated through the course of history. Obama said today that John Lewis and the foot soldiers are his heroes. They are our heroes too, President Obama. It’s time we properly honor their brave sacrifices here 50 years ago. Let’s #MarchOn.
