50 years ago, hundreds of men and women took action against racial injustice in their community as hundreds of marchers crossed the Edmund Pettus bridge. Weeks earlier, an Alabama state trooper killed Jimmie Lee Jackson, a young man trying to protect his mother during a nonviolence night march in Marion, Alabama. These young nonviolent revolutionaries decided to let their feet do the talking. Last Sunday, we did the same thing. Our petition to rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge has brought us to this point, and we believe that we can change one of the many Confederate symbols left in this town. We are fighting to rename the bridge so that it will represent the bravery and sacrifice of the movement that started there on Bloody Sunday and to awaken the passion and energy of our generation.
