I also wanted to take this opportunity to spread further information about Schmucker and his problematic views. My language in the initial petition mentioned his stance towards intellectual disability, but failed to detail what that term really meant in Schmucker's time. According to Aaron Stoyack and Dr. Ruswick's research, Schmucker's eugenics promoted white supremacy, racism, ableism, and misogyny. His published works use his position here at WCU to promote these hateful ideas. More information can be found in either of the Quad articles on the subject.
