Rename Matas Library to Honor Social Justice Initiatives at Tulane University school of Me

The Issue

As a student at Tulane School of Medicine, I have experienced firsthand the importance of social justice in our education. However, one aspect that has always struck me as contradictory is the name of our library - Matas Library. It is time for us to come together as a community and advocate for change by renaming this iconic institution.

Matas Library, named after Rudolph Matas, a prominent surgeon from New Orleans, holds great historical significance. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that history can be complex and multifaceted. While we respect Dr. Matas' contributions to medicine, his legacy also includes controversial, hate filled views on race that are not aligned with the values we uphold today.

Our medical school prides itself on fostering an inclusive environment where students from diverse backgrounds can thrive. The name "Matas Library" contradicts this commitment by perpetuating an association with someone whose beliefs were exclusionary.

By renaming our library to honor those in our community who have faught for changes towards medical equity, we would send a powerful message about our dedication to creating an equitable learning environment for all students at Tulane School of Medicine.

By signing this petition, you are expressing your support for renaming the Matas Library at Tulane School of Medicine. Together, let us create an environment that reflects our values and inspires future generations to pursue social justice initiatives in medicine.

Thank you for joining me in this important endeavor.

Sincerely,

Tessa Vanooteghem
