Rename Kosovo to Dardania: Restore Our Historical Identity

 

Why this petition matters

 

We, the undersigned, call upon the Government and Assembly of Kosovo to officially rename the Republic of Kosovo to the Republic of Dardania. This change would honor our nation’s deep historical roots, strengthen our national identity, and reinforce our rightful place in the region.

 

Why Dardania?

1. A Return to Our True Heritage

The name Dardania originates from the ancient Illyrian kingdom that thrived in the Balkans, with its heartland in present-day Kosovo. The Dardanians were a strong and influential people whose legacy continues in our traditions and culture.

2. Strengthening National Identity and Unity

The name Kosovo is linked to foreign rule and does not fully represent our indigenous Albanian identity. By embracing Dardania, we reclaim a name rooted in our own history, not one imposed on us.

3. A Symbol of Independence and Sovereignty

The name Dardania was championed by President Ibrahim Rugova as a representation of Kosovo’s rightful statehood. Many institutions already use this name, proving its significance. Officially adopting it would reinforce our sovereignty and honor our nation’s struggle for independence.

4. International Recognition and Distinction

A name change to Dardania would eliminate confusion with other regions and strengthen our international image as a historically rich and independent nation.

 

What we are asking for

 

We respectfully urge the Government and Assembly of Kosovo to:

 

✅ Initiate discussions on renaming the country to Republic of Dardania

✅ Allow public consultation and, if necessary, a referendum

✅ Work with international organizations to facilitate a smooth transition
