Rename Julie Payette Public School in Whitby, Ontario
The Issue
In Whitby, Ontario, a public school is named after Julie Payette, a figure previously admired for her accomplishments and contributions to Canada. However, revelations have surfaced about her behaviour that contradicts the very values we instil in our young people. Bullying is not tolerated in schools, and yet, a bully’s name remains on the facade of an institution meant to foster growth, respect, and learning. This contradiction undermines the very essence of the educational ethos we strive to uphold.
The news of Julie Payette's alleged misconduct while in her professional roles as Governor General of Canada, including creating a toxic work environment, has deeply affected many parents, students, and community members. It stands as a stark reminder of the power dynamics and consequences of toxic behaviours, which we actively teach our children to recognize and stand against.
In recognizing this, we are asking the Durham District School Board to take immediate steps to rename the Julie Payette Public School. By doing so, we set a precedent that actions and character matter. Schools should celebrate and honour individuals whose lives and deeds serve as true role models for our children and community—figures who inspire innovation, integrity, and inclusivity.
To achieve this, we propose a community-driven process to determine a worthy replacement, one that reflects the values we aspire to teach our students. We encourage the Durham District School Board to engage with students, parents, educators, and community leaders in this effort. Transparency and inclusivity in the renaming process will ensure that the final choice reflects our collective values and vision for the school.
The current name sends a conflicting message to our children, and it’s crucial that we rectify this situation. Let us stand together as a community in setting the right example—one that distinguishes our commitment to positive character building and zero tolerance towards bullying.
Join us in taking a stand for our children, our schools, and our community values by signing this petition. Your signature can help us show the Durham District School Board that change is necessary and that we are committed to ushering in a name that truly embodies the principles we hold dear.
