The Issue

As individuals deeply connected to the Tulu culture and heritage, we know firsthand that our district name, Dakshina Kannada, is not reflective of our rich Tulu background but a label imposed by the Karnataka Government. Historically, it was known as South Canara, a name assigned by British colonizers that hints at past subjugation. We seek to move past these imposed identities by resurrecting our rightful name - Kudla.

The Tulu language and culture are intricately tied to our region's identity; hence the need to make the name reflect this reality. Tulu, spoken by around 1.84 million people in India alone according to the 2011 census, is an intrinsic part of our heritage. Yet, it remains categorized as a vulnerable language by UNESCO. Reviving our traditional district name could be a powerful symbolic step towards preventing the extinction of our language and cultural essence.

Renaming Dakshina Kannada to Kudla would be more than just a name change. It would be a move that empowers the Tulu-speaking population to preserve its endangered language and cultural heritage. It will also be a way of educating others about the vibrant Tulu culture and honoring the people who are keeping this tradition alive despite years of linguistic and cultural imposition.

This is the right time to honor our regional identity and stand against cultural assimilation. Sign this petition to voice your support for renaming Dakshina Kannada District as Kudla, and together, let's ensure the survival of our Tulu language and culture.
