We are asking Jersey City to rename Christopher Columbus Drive.

Christopher Columbus is a person with a history representing the horrific acts of violence, genocide, and slavery.

Over 500 years after he "discovered" the New World, beginning centuries of exploitation and colonization of the Americas, Christopher Columbus is sadly still honored with a federal holiday, statues, and parades across America. In the last few years, many cities and states, as well as private and public businesses, have renamed Christopher Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Jersey City is a place that prides itself on diversity and cultural acceptance. We promote ourselves as pride as being the most diverse city in the United States. Our own Mayor Steven Fulop tweeted, "We believe the different communities in #JC is an asset and makes the city a better place to live," when this news was announced.

We want to be on the right side of history, which means we support renaming Christopher Columbus Drive. Our current suggestions are to Indigenous Peoples Drive or Black Lives Matter Drive. We are open to all recommendations!

Let’s take another step forward together and remove this symbol of genocide!
